Privacy Policy

Last updated: May 2026

Off By is a daily numbers game. This policy explains what data we collect, how we use it, and the controls you have.

Playing without signing in

You can play Off By without creating an account. When you do, we collect only:

Anonymous usage analytics via PostHog — page views, game events (started, completed, scores), device type, and approximate location (city/country) derived from your IP address. This is not linked to your identity.

A random device token stored in your browser so we can remember your streak and preferences. You can clear this at any time by clearing your browser storage.

Keeping your streak across browser wipes

Browsers occasionally clear their own storage — Safari does this for sites you haven't visited in a while. To keep that from wiping your streak, we set a small server-side cookie (offby_pid) when you load offby.io, and pair it with two pieces of information that help us recognize your device if your browser storage gets cleared:

• A short prefix of your IP address — the network range, never the full address.
• A one-way hash of your browser's user-agent string.

This data lives on our server, not in your browser. We use it for one thing: restoring your streak after a browser wipe so you don't get treated as a brand-new player. We delete it automatically after 400 days of inactivity, or 30 days after you sign out. The native iOS app doesn't use this cookie — it uses the operating system's secure preference store instead, which is sandboxed to Off By and persists until you uninstall the app.

Signing in

Signing in is optional. If you sign in with your email (via a magic link), we store:

Your email address — used to send the magic link and, if you opt in, a daily reminder that a new game is ready. We don't share it with anyone.

Your game history — streak, scores, and the daily result you see on your end screen. Signing in lets you keep your progress across devices.

A username, if you choose one. This is shown to friends in the groups you join.

Notifications

If you enable push notifications, we store a device token so we can send you a daily reminder. The token is not linked to your identity unless you're signed in. You can turn notifications off at any time from your device settings.

Friends and groups

If you join a group with friends, other group members can see your username and daily results. Joining is optional. You can leave a group at any time — your historical results stay with you, but the group owner will no longer see them.

Deleting your data

You can delete your account and all associated data at any time from the in-app menu (Account → Delete account). This removes your email, username, game history, group memberships, subscription preferences, any challenges you've sent or received, and the device-recognition record described above. Deletion is permanent and immediate.

If you never signed in, you can clear everything by clearing your browser storage and cookies, or uninstalling the app. Signing out also revokes the device-recognition cookie within 30 days.

Data sources for questions

Game questions are sourced from publicly available government and industry reports, including the Bureau of Labor Statistics, Federal Reserve, USDA, AAA, and Pew Research. Figures reflect the most recent available data and are updated periodically.

Third parties

We share only what's necessary with these services:

PostHog — anonymous usage analytics.
Resend — email delivery (magic links, daily reminders).
Apple Push Notification service and web push providers — delivery of daily reminder notifications.

We don't sell your data, and we don't use it for advertising.

Children

Off By is not directed to children under 13, and we don't knowingly collect data from them. If you believe a child has provided us with personal information, email us and we'll delete it.

Changes

If we make material changes to this policy, we'll update the date at the top and, for signed-in users, send a notice to your email.
