About 35% of US adults floss daily, up from 29% in 2009, a difference too small for researchers to separate from chance. The federal government recommended flossing from 1979 until 2015, when it dropped the advice from the Dietary Guidelines because the supporting evidence was too weak to meet the legal bar for inclusion.
Dentists have pushed flossing for more than 40 years. About 35% of US adults actually floss daily.
