China's most popular models are Alibaba's Qwen family, which was downloaded 3 billion times in six months, more than any other free AI models in the world. Hugging Face, the site developers use to get these models, counts 418 million downloads for Google's models across 2026. Alibaba has released more than 460 Qwen models, all free to download and run on your own computers.
Developers have built more than 300,000 modified versions on top of Qwen. A model that other people build on is hard to walk away from, because every tool written around Qwen keeps needing Qwen.
The most-downloaded free AI models in the world are Chinese. Alibaba counts 3 billion downloads of Qwen in six months.
