298

The fifth edition of the DSM lists 298 disorders, up from 106 in the 1952 original. The manual actually traces back to an 1840 census form with a single label: idiocy/insanity. By 1880, that had expanded to seven categories, including melancholia and alcoholism. When the official DSM finally debuted in 1952, it filled 130 pages. Today's version spans 1,120.

America's psychiatric manual began as one box on the 1840 census, marked "idiocy/insanity." It now lists 298 disorders.
