$14,400
About $14,400, or 2.22 million yen. Koala, an Australian mattress brand, picked that figure because 2-2-2 reads as the ZZZ of sleep. The Mattrace event puts about 20 people on mattresses at a time, wires them to sleep trackers, and scores depth, stability and how fast they fall asleep. Entry is free, and organizers plan to set off disturbances mid-nap to see who stays asleep.
Japan sleeps less than any other country the OECD measures. A mattress company holding a national napping contest there is selling to the most sleep-deprived rich country on earth.
Tokyo is holding a 90-minute nap contest. First prize is about $14,400, set at 2.22 million yen as a nod to ZZZ.
