Meta guaranteed at least $12.1 billion to settle claims from 51 states and territories that its apps were designed to keep children hooked. A further $5 billion is owed only if rival platforms adopt comparable safety measures, which would take the total to $17.1 billion over ten years. Four states had been seeking about $200 billion at trial.
