Nasdaq trades 16 hours a day. How many hours a day does the Tokyo Stock Exchange trade?

5.5 hours. The Tokyo Stock Exchange trades only from 9:00 to 11:30 a.m. and 12:30 to 3:30 p.m., taking a mandatory one-hour lunch break in between. It recently added 30 minutes to the afternoon session in November 2024, its first adjustment to the closing bell in 70 years.

Midday breaks remain an Asian market staple. While Wall Street, London, and Sydney run continuously, Hong Kong, Shanghai, and Singapore still step away for lunch. Until 2011, Hong Kong shut down for two full hours every single trading day.

The Tokyo Stock Exchange closes for a full hour at lunch. It trades 5.5 hours a day. Nasdaq trades three times as long.
