Asbestos causes lung cancer, mesothelioma, ovarian cancer and laryngeal cancer. The EPA's ban on chrysotile asbestos took effect in May 2024, 35 years after its first attempt in 1989. The phase-outs stretch for years, and one Department of Energy site is permitted to keep using asbestos through 2037.

Asbestos has only been banned in the US since 2024. One federal site is permitted to keep using it through 2037.
