The FDA recently recalled thyroid pills for being too weak. How many Americans take a thyroid pill every day?

19 million

About 19 million Americans take levothyroxine, the standard thyroid hormone replacement, making it the second most prescribed drug in the country. The pills in the August recall were subpotent, carrying less thyroid hormone than the label promised.

The recalled pills came from Intas Pharmaceuticals in India, which the FDA warned in March 2026 for failing to resolve repeated out-of-specification results. Accord has now recalled levothyroxine four times since June 2025.
