The Jewish New Year begins this weekend. What year will it be on the Hebrew calendar?

5787

5787. The Hebrew calendar starts counting at 3761 BCE, the traditional biblical date for the creation of the world. Its twelve lunar months add up to about 354 days, so it adds a leap month seven times every 19 years to keep Rosh Hashanah from drifting out of September and October.

The Islamic calendar is purely lunar with no leap month at all, so it slides about 11 days earlier each year and its new year drifts through every season.

The Jewish New Year starts the year 5787. The Hebrew calendar counts the years since the traditional creation of the world.
