About 200 hours together turns someone into a close friend. Jeffrey Hall at the University of Kansas surveyed 355 adults who had just moved cities. Time spent working alongside someone barely counted; what predicted closeness was the hours people chose to spend together.
About 50 hours together makes a casual friend. Becoming a close friend takes 200. Working beside them doesn't count.
