The median new American home completed in 2025 measured 2,142 square feet, about 40% larger than in 1973. Sizes peaked at 2,467 square feet in 2015 and have dropped since, as builders try to reduce footprint to offset higher mortgage rates. Size also varies sharply by region: new homes in the Northeast average 2,459 square feet, compared to just 1,969 in the Midwest.
The median new American home is 2,142 square feet, 40% bigger than in 1973 but down from a peak of 2,467 in 2015.
