In one lifetime the fireplace went from standard equipment to an afterthought. 73% of new single-family homes were built without one in 2025, up from 36% in 1978. A house going up in the South or the West is even less likely to get one than a house in the Northeast.

The fireplace is vanishing from American homes. 73% of new houses built in 2025 didn't have one.
