Nineteen states and Washington DC now report the spotted lanternfly. For the people living with it the problem is not the bug; it is the drip. It drinks tree sap and rains the surplus sugar onto decks, cars and grills, then draws the wasps that come for it. Homeowners describe being driven off their own patios.
The spotted lanternfly has reached 19 states. Pennsylvania's official advice to residents is to squash it on sight.
