American Airlines flies more than 1,000 mainline jets. How many have seatback screens for in-flight entertainment?

Only about 140 of American's 1,030 mainline jets have in-flight entertainment screens in the seatback, and most of those are jets flying international routes. American Airlines began ripping the screens out of domestic planes in 2017, wagering that passengers would rather use their own phones and laptops. In August 2026 it conceded the bet: every new single-aisle jet from 2028 arrives with a 4K screen, and the older ones get retrofitted by the early 2030s.
